Elizabethtown Pennsylvania Location & History
Elizabethtown is a borough northwest of Lancaster City. It is commonly referred to as “E-Town”. The city sprung from a trading post established in 1730 on the Conoy Creek. Many of the early settlers were Scots-Irish and Pennsylvania Dutch. Captain Barnabas Hughes, one of the early settlers, acquired land and laid out a town in 1753. He decided to name it after his wife Elizabeth. Agriculture was the main way of life, until the early 1900’s when Klein Chocolate Company and several shoe factories opened. In 1899, Elizabethtown College was established and in 1911; the Masonic Homes followed. In a 2000 census, the population was 11,887.
Elizabethtown College
One of Elizabethtown’s most prominent institutions is Elizabethtown College. It was established in 1899 by the Church of the Brethren, to further the educational advancement of their denomination. Today Elizabethtown College boasts 53 major programs of study, as well as more than 60 minors. The student population is 1,950 and there are 131 faculty members.
Another long-time institution is the Masonic Village, originally the Masonic Homes. It has become a vast retirement community for Masons and their spouses. The Masons are well-regarded for their work with crippled children.

There are eight public schools in Elizabethtown including: Bainbridge Elementary School, East High Street Elementary School, Elizabethtown Area Middle School, Elizabethtown Area Senior High School, Fairview Elementary School, Mill Road Elementary School, and Rheems Elementary School. There are two private schools: Mt. Calvary Christian School and St. Peter’s Catholic School and one college: Elizabethtown.
