Strasburg PA History

Strasburg’s first settlers were French Huguenots. A French fur trader, Pierre Bezaillion, hunted and traded in the area with the Delaware Indians as early as 1693. Not long after, the Swiss Mennonites followed and the first log cabin was built by the Kendig family in 1717.

Strasburg was a busy town in the 18th century because it was located along the major wagon routes between Philadelphia, Lancaster, and the Susquehanna River. There were many taverns in town, which saw their share of rough travelers. For a time the town gained the unenviable name of “Hell’s Hole”.

Many of the citizens of Strasburg had strong educational and religious backgrounds; in turn, the town became a thriving cultural and educational center. In 1790, a Reverend named Nathaniel Sample founded the Strasburg Philosophical Society, the Strasburg Scientific Society, Strasburg’s first formal school, and a theological school.

When the Philadelphia and Columbia Rail Road was built in the 1830’s, the town of Strasburg was bypassed. Fearing they would lose their commercial position, Strasburg residents secured a charter from the Pennsylvania Legislature to construct a line connecting to the main line of the Philadelphia and Columbia Rail Road near Paradise. The project was not completed until 1852 due to financial difficulties. The financial success of this new line was short lived with the advent of the automobile and the changes it brought over the years.

In 1957, a company was formed to preserve and operate the shortline railroad as an attraction for visitors to come and ride. It is now one of the area’s top destinations and is America’s oldest shortline railroad, inspiring other train related attractions in the area, including the impressive Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.

Over the years, Strasburg’s residents have taken most of the older houses along Main Street, which were originally private schools and academies, and restored them to their original splendor. A building that would be hard to miss, is Massasoit Hall. It was constructed in 1856 and sits in the square where routes 896 and 741 intersect. It is a very large brick building with a belfry, and its original use was a place for the townspeople to meet and discuss current news and attend events in a second floor auditorium.
