Willow Street, PA History & Location
Willow Street is located in the southern end of Lancaster County. It was named in the early 20th century for its main thoroughfare through town, which was lined with Willow trees. As the town grew, so did the road. Along with the widening of the road, sidewalks were added, necessitating the removal of most of the trees. Only a few original trees remain today.

Hans Herr House, Willow Street, PA
One of Willow Street’s most famous landmarks is the Hans Herr House, built in 1719. It is the oldest still-standing European dwelling place in what is now Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and it is also the oldest Mennonite meeting house in the Western Hemisphere. Herr was the patriarch of a group of Swiss Mennonites who had come to America to escape the persecution they had endured for over 200 years. The house was built by Hans’ son Christian. It served as a family residence and a congregational meeting place, and it is now open to the public as a museum.
